What ever happened to taking field trips? If you went to a public school, you probably remember how it went. You brought your little slip home a few weeks before, begged your mom to sign it, and brought it back to your teacher. On the day of, you packed your little paper bag lunch, and got to school as fast as you could. You loaded up the big yellow school bus and surrounded yourself with all of your buddies. If your friends were like mine, you probably all scream-sang camp-songs and “The Wheels on The Bus”. It didn’t matter where you were going, or what you were going to do there. It was fun because it was somewhere new, and because you didn’t have to sit in school all day!
I’m here to tell you that field trips shouldn’t stop after graduation. Nothing is stopping you from taking a day, weekend, or even just half a day to go explore somewhere new. Reality check: you don’t need to travel the world to gain experiences that you’ve never had before. The excitement of travel comes from the ability to do new things and see new places. I can guarantee you that unless you’ve dedicated your entire life to exploring the area around where you live, you haven’t been everywhere.
Here’s my challenge to you today:
On just one or two of your days off in the coming month, pack a bag, grab a friend, and hop in your car. You don’t need to plan a bunch of crazy stuff, or even go very far, but get out of your town. Go to a city or area that you’ve never explored before, and WANDER! Put your phones away (unless you’re taking rad photos), find somewhere to get brunch, sip coffee, read books, play games, or whatever you’re into, and enjoy each other’s company. Forget about work. Forget about your schedule, lists, and responsibilities, and GO. Here’s your permission slip, go and take a field trip. You can thank me later.
